The check engine light is the car saying something is out of range. It is rarely an emergency, and occasionally it is exactly that.
Steady or flashing
A steady light means book it this week. A flashing light means an active misfire that can overheat the catalytic converter, so pull over and call.
The code is a starting point
A code like P0302 says cylinder two is misfiring. It does not say whether that is a plug, a coil, an injector or a vacuum leak. Finding which one is the diagnosis.
The loose gas cap is real
About one light in twenty is an evaporative leak from a cap that did not click. Tighten it, and the light can take a few days of driving to clear.
Why the diagnosis costs $119
It is roughly an hour of testing and a road test. It comes off the bill if we do the repair, so you only pay for it when the answer is that you do not need us.
Do not clear it and hope
Clearing the code erases the freeze-frame data that tells us when and how the fault happened. Bring the car in with the light still on.
